A teenager has been taken to hospital suffering from serious foot and facial injuries after being hit by a bus near East Croydon station.

The 16-year-old girl was treated at the scene in George Street by an ambulance crew before being taken to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, as a priority.

Two fire engines and a fire rescue unit were called to the accident at 12.29pm to free the youth from under the vehicle.

But they left the scene about 10 minutes later because she was not trapped.

Part of the road was cordoned off by police while emergency services were at the scene.

Witnesses said they feared the teenager had been killed in the collision.

Danielle Uan Ommeren, aged 21, said: "I just came back from my lunch break and saw the ambulance parking. The was a woman on her knees screaming to another woman under the bus.

"They put up a sheet around where she was lying on the ground. It did not look good."

Daniel King, 25, who manages nearby second-hand entertainment store Cex, described the road was an accident blackspot.

He said: "We see a lot of accidents here. Pedestrians have been hit crossing the road. I must have seen about three in the last year."
