Parents have been asked to give their views on plans to build a new school serving people in southern Sutton and Croydon.

Private school Wallington County Grammar School (WCGS) wants to build a brand new free comprehensive school to serve pupils in Woodmansterne, Purley, Couldsden and South Croydon.

WCGS headteacher Jonathan Wilden said he wants the school to specialise in sport and be used by the wider community but is calling on prospective parents to make their feelings known about what they would like from the school and where it should be situated.

One possible location for the school would be on the site of Walcountians Rugby Club in Woodmansterne. The site is already owned by the school and would be redeveloped so the club remains in place but forms part of a larger campus along with the school.

However, Mr Wilden said he is also exploring the possibility of having it elsewhere in the south Croydon area.

He added: "It is our intention to build a new free school in the best place for parents, carers and young people.

"Every child deserves to find a place in their local secondary school which offers an aspirational pathway.

"This will become increasingly difficult as numbers of children in the primary sector grow. It is not our intention to disrupt local communities but bring outstanding educational facilities.

"We will continue to listen to the thoughts of local residents across Woodmansterne, Coulsdon, Purley and South Croydon until we have found the best place for our new school.

"All those interested in registering an interest in a school such as this should do so through our website."

WCGS held a meeting in Woodmansterne about the plans last month that attracted 150 people. A subsequent meeting had to be cancelled due to issues over capacity.
