A robber who stole a student's wallet at knifepoint before being bitten by a police dog has been jailed for 27 months.

Jordan Wright, 21, of no fixed abode, followed the 24-year-old victim along Grove Road, Thornton Heath, before threatening him with a Stanley knife and demanding money.

The terrified university student handed over his wallet and then reported the robbery to police, who took him on a search for the thief.

The victim identified Wright in Galpins Road.

Wright tried to flee but was pursued by police officers with the support of a helicopter and dogs unit and arrested.

He required treatment at Croydon University Hospital for wounds inflicted by a police dog in the chase, but suffered no serious injuries.

Wright was charged with robbery and possession of cannabis on January 27, four days after the robbery. He pleaded guilty on May 13 and was sentenced on June 20.

Det Cons Sue Day-Sawyer said: "I am pleased that Wright has received a custodial sentence for this appalling act.

"He threatened the victim with a knife and thought he would be able to get away with it but with the assistance of my colleagues in the air support unit and MPS dogs unit he was caught.

"This case shows that we will pursue offenders and bring them to justice."
