Members of the community who have given up their time to help others and bring people together have been honoured at an award ceremony.

There were more than 150 nominations for the Croydon Community Civic Awards from across Croydon.

And after some deliberation by the judges, the winners were announced at a ceremony at the Hilton hotel, Purley Way.

Winners included Jyotsna Patel, 70, who was given the lifetime achievement award for her work spanning more than 40 years including helping people learn English, organising activities to bring the old and young together and promoting healthy eating.

Croydon mayor Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed said: “We have a long tradition in Croydon for volunteering and I hope that, through these awards, this tradition will grow stronger.”
