A South Croydon man has become the first person in London to be convicted of riding a hoverboard on the pavement.

Radu Ciurcanu, 38, of Haling Park Road, was stopped by police in London Road at the junction with Station Road in Croydon after nearly hitting several pedestrians.

He was prosecuted for the incident on January 2 and has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £155 after being found guilty at Bromley Magistrates' Court of driving a vehicle on a footpath.

The Met Police say it is thought to be the first conviction of its kind in London.

PC Russell Easterbrook, of Croydon police, said: "While our priority is to tackle the most serious crime, officers also have a duty to address the concerns of Londoners about anti-social and dangerous behaviour.

"Ciurcanu very nearly collided with several members of the public.

“I hope that this case will serve to remind the public of their responsibility not to put the safety of others in jeopardy by riding any vehicle on the pavement."
