A woman has described as "crazy" and "lovely" her alien-obsessed husband who chose a deserted airbase for their TV wedding.

Alien believer Liam Speirs, from Tadworth, was shown this week on BBC Three’s Don't Tell the Bride organising an interstellar, Men in Black, wedding at a deserted military airbase for his bride Lynn.

Lynn Speirs, 32, said they invited friends and family round to watch the show on Tuesday night for the first time. It included a pretend wedding officiated by an alien in a bunker.

She told the Epsom Guardian: "It was so nerve-raking. I had butterflies in my stomach before watching it. Because I was so upset about the wedding dress, I was really concerned about how that would come across."

The couple watched the wedding together again the following night. She said: "I still cringe really badly when I watch it, but I love seeing Liam in action."

When asked about how she felt sharing her day with viewers, she said: "I don’t really think about it because we were so lucky to have the experience.

"I’m pleased everybody got to see how crazy my husband is. He’s lovely. He’s just perfect the way he is."

Mrs Speirs said her husband is getting quite a bit of stick for the programme in which he said he wanted her to fall in love with his mind filled with aliens and conspiracy theories.

She said: "Everyone who knows Liam knows what he’s like but the general public must be thinking ‘Oh my God, she’s married a nutter’."

Asked if he was accurately portrayed, she laughed: "Unfortunately yes, he’s just like that all the time."

Three months on from the wedding on June 1, she said the family of four, including their baby daughter and her son from a previous relationship, were very content.

The wedding cake

She said: "We both love being married. It’s changed us for the better and made us more of a unit. It’s really, really nice."

Debbie Steers, who made the couple’s wedding cake, said she replied ‘no’ when Liam suggested a cake with a spaceship on top then a triffid-style cake.

Ms Steers, who works in the distribution department for this newspaper, said they finally settled on two cakes - a black and white cake for the bride and an alien cake for the groom.

She said: "The programme is fantastic but the wedding was so much lovelier in real life. I think the show was trying to put over the alien side."

Of the couple, she added: "They are nice inside and out. It just made it all so much nicer. I loved the wedding. It was the best wedding I have ever been to."

Ms Steers of Angel Hill Drive, Sutton, who has a Facebook group called Bake That 13, also made a cake for the owner of Aurora Bride wedding dress shop in North Cheam where Mr Speirs brought the wedding dress.

The couple have planned a honeymoon in Florida for next year.
