Convoy of caravans descends on Tooting Common for traveller wedding

A convoy of travellers have invaded Tooting Common to attend a wedding ceremony.

The group of 19 vehicles arrived on the common yesterday afternoon but they were immediately warned they will face prosecution and have their caravans seized if they do not leave within 24 hours.

They had been ordered to quit this afternoon and any travellers who flout this deadline will face the firm prospect of being taken to court.

It is the second time in a month that travellers have pitched up on the common.

Camping overnight on any part of Tooting Common, without prior authorisation from Wandsworth Council, is a criminal offence under parks and open spaces byelaws.

The council has powers to physically remove any person, and their belongings, including vehicles, if they do not comply with the byelaws.

Council officers and the Metropolitan Police’s safer parks team will be monitoring the group throughout the day to ensure that no other byelaws are breached.

To report a breach of these byelaws call emergency response team on 020 8871 6900.

The council provides an approved travellers site in Trewint Street, Earlsfield.
