Officers stopped a 35-year-old man in Wellesley Road on June 14, as he matched the description of a man suspected of committing a fraud offence.

When they searched the man, officers discovered he was carrying £10,000 cash.

They asked him how he came to be in possession of the money, but he was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation and was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

He was taken into police custody and when officers searched his home in Pampisford Road, they found 86 packets of what is thought to be cocaine.

Police seized the drugs, which are thought to have a street value in excess of £260,000.

DC Jim Cann from Croydon's Payback Unit, which deals with investigations linked with proceeds of crime said: "This is a significant amount of drugs we have taken out of circulation.

"We have also seized the £10,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act and we will be carrying out a full financial investigation to trace and restrain any other assets gained through illegal means."

The man was subsequently charged with possession of class A drugs with intent to supply and has been remanded to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court later this month.
