With Croydon's large proportion of ethnic minorities, the south London borough has become a medley of cultures with projects and initiatives promoting ethnic diversity springing up all over the borough.
As well as raising awareness of the many different cultures living side by side in the borough, these initiatives also serve to improve relations within society.
One of the schemes made available to youngsters in Croydon is the New Media Edge project which not only encourages the exploration of different cultures, but harnesses musical talent in the form of a initiative which will culminate in a concert in Denmark later this year.
New Media Edge aims to forge international links between young people by teaching new skills, creating new work and celebrating the diversity of each culture through the composition of music.
Croydon Council was successful in its bid to the European Union's Culture 2000 initiative and the New Media Edge project will end in a major music event in Ballerup, in Denmark, where a group of young people from Croydon will perform work they have composed whilst working with some of the most celebrated musicians based within the partner countries.
It is hoped that the concert will be produced on the internet to attract the widest possible audience to experience this unique event.
The Media edge project is a partnership between ESDU, Croydon Music Service, Nestl and Parchmore Youth & Community Centre.
