A former Croydon Champion is able to move on his own after a charity gave him a standing frame costing £2,000.
Shawn Rogers, 11, who was born with cancer, won the child of courage award in 2005 for his battle against the odds.
He has been unable to stand without help and had the use of a walking frame at his special school, which he had to share with other pupils.
His mother Natasha regularly asked NHS Croydon if Shawn could have his own frame but the PCT said it was too expensive.
She said: “They told me he had access to a frame at school and that was enough.”
She approached the Newlife Foundation after hearing about the charity through Shawn’s physiotherapist and they were able to give the brave boy the frame.
She said: “I’m so thrilled. The standing frame gives Shawn the supporting help he needs, but most of all the freedom to be independent and to stand like everyone else. Without it, Shawn is stuck in a wheelchair.”
