A Spanish teacher has been praised for going above and beyond the call of duty in his dedication to his pupils.

Bruno Gomes, 32, who worked at Woodcote High School for five years, has been nominated for the Croydon Champion's teacher of the year award.

Rose Viaggiani, whose son benefited greatly under his tutelage, nominated Mr Gomes for the award when she saw how much her son was improving under his care.

She said: "My son was on course for a D in Spanish at GCSE, and today we have found out that he has got an A! Mr Gomes has been fantastic- for all the students, not just for us.

"He would put on extra classes after school and on Saturday mornings. He would then call every parent to let them know about their child's progress, and to encourage them to attend. He has not just gone the extra mile, he has gone the full marathon."

Mr Gomes, who recently left Woodcote High to be the Head of Spanish at the Chelsea Academy in Chelsea.

He said: "I am really, really ecstatic and flattered to have been nominated for this award.

"It was completely unexpected and it is such a pleasure to feel so appreciated, thank you. I really enjoyed my time at Woodcote High and wish the students all the very best for the future."
