An amateur photographer who opened a new art gallery at the Clocktower has been nominated for the Croydon Champions arts champion award.
John Reeve’s Click Clock Photography and Art Gallery in the Clocktower Café was officially opened on September 2, 2011 and has since boasted the work of more than 24 artists and photographers.
Following the loss of many of the arts amenities in the borough, Mr Reeve seized the initiative and championed the work of disabled painter Nicky Nicholls, who sold 21 paintings through the exhibition.
Miss Nicholls has since gained a commission to work on town centre postcards for Croydon Business Improvement District.
Mr Reeve, a semi-retired chartered surveyor, changes the exhibits once a month and said he is overwhelmed with portfolios, with numerous artists and photographers all over the country jumping at the rare opportunity to have their work exhibited.
He said he "actively encourages the work by people of all ages, particularly young people, in view of the events of August 2011."
Liz Sheppard-Jones from Croydon Business Improvement District, who nominated Mr Reeve said: "John's work has ensured that the arts have remained at the forefront of Croydon community life, and it was thanks to him that the Click Clock Christmas show gave a welcome artistic focus to the Town Centre's Christmas Festival 2011.
"John's energetic promotional work for the gallery also has helped to keep Croydon firmly on the arts map of London."
She emphasised that it was "important that Croydon was recognised as a Centre of arts and culture, not just shopping.
"Thanks to his efforts, visitors to the Town Hall and café are now made aware of the lively local arts and photography scene in Croydon."
Those interested in exhibiting their work can contact John Reeve at email@example.com or visit him in the Clocktower café.
The Click Clock gallery is free to enter and is open every day between 9.30am-5.30pm, except for Saturdays when it closes at 5pm.
