Promising young Croydon Harrier Jordan Maurice was hungry for action at the weekend, writes Mike Fleet.

Having run for Surrey on Saturday, he displayed commendable club spirit by turning out for the Harriers in the Downs League the following day.

He was a respectable 50th in the tough inter-county event at Parliament Hill where he was well supported by Will Mercer, 58th.

On Sunday, Maurice revelled in the winter sunshine Epsom, when he led from start to finish, winning comfortably in 12-minutes and 10-seconds.

His Croydon team-mates took the next three positions.

Elliott Verheary kept attacking and finished 20seconds adrift. Mark Plackett produced one of his best runs, third in 13:07 and Zack Dennington kept him on his toes to fourth in 13:19. Emily Knight finished 15th in 15:51 Their team win consolidated the club at the head of the Downs League U13 section.

The club, light on the ground in other age groups, was pleased to welcome Scott Fanner back after injury and he eased himself into competition again with a steady 11th among the U15s in 14:25.

Andrew Statter ran in sprightly fashion in the U13 race and can be pleased with his fighting fourth in 12:59.
