A Croydon writer and performer is hoping to prove there is nun more theatrical by raising enough money to put on his show a musical about the life of art critic Sister Wendy.

Marcus Reeves has been working on his show, Postcards from God The Sister Wendy Musical, for more than a year but needs £30,000 to see it performed at a London venue.

The 26-year-old, from Woodside, wants to raise the money so he can bring the story of his idol Sister Wendy Beckett to new audiences.

He explained: "I'm interested in the contrast between the two worlds she lives in the life of a contemplative hermit and the life of an international TV personality.

"In a culture where you can be famous for boiling the kettle she is someone who is well-known for something worthwhile bringing art to the masses. While most people would relish the notoriety she has she rejects it, which many people find hard to understand."

Marcus has even got the blessing of the art-loving nun best known for the BBC show Sister Wendy's Story of Painting.

He said: "We sent her the script and she's given the project her blessing, but as a hermit, she's not a regular theatre-goer. She seems very modest and humble, so although she's wished us well, I think she finds it embarrassing to be the focus of so much attention."

He added: "The project happened almost accidentally, I started writing a piece about the nature of fame and it came out of that. Originally the show was more of a conversation about art and fame between myself and a puppet of Sister Wendy, but it grew and changed into a musical about her life and work."

Marcus is holding a fundraising event at the Kinky Mambo Cocktail Lounge and Club, Islington, on January 29, from 2pm to 11pm, £7.50 entrance.
