Celebrity dancer Kirsty Swain joined youngsters participating in a dancing competition on Friday.

The So You Think You Can Dance finalist watched dancers from Wandsworth schools compete for the chance to perform at the Southbank Centre in July.

Students aged 11 to 18 from eight schools, including two special needs schools, danced their way through performances at Ashcroft Technology Academy, in West Hill.

The Step into Dance event saw pupils from Ricards Lodge School, St Cecilia's School and Garratt Park School dust off their dancing shoes to take part.

They were also joined by students from Dunraven School, Ashcroft Technology Academy, Paddock Senior School, William Morris Sixth Form and Bishopsford Arts College.

The project was devised by the Royal Academy of Dance and The Jack Petchey Foundation to offer dance classes to 187 schools in London and Essex.

Some of the schools will be selected to represent Wandsworth in the Step Live! 2012 show on July 7 at the Southbank Centre, with the winners yet to be announced.

Dancers who show a particular flair have go on to join the Step into Dance Youth Company, touring famous performance venues.

There are also opportunities for further training for any students who want to take up a career in the arts.

The schools picked for the final event will be announced in May.
