The Humber Bridge may not be the equivalent of the summit of Mount Everest or the North Pole, but it was far enough for Croydon environemntailists who travelled there on a mechanical rhino.

Croydon Green Party member Andrew Lindsay is now back home after pedaling from his Coulsdon home with two friends on Bridget the rhinocycle'.

Bridget was made from two tandem bicycles with a plywood rhinoceros body and a life-size head.

The aim of the trip was to highlight the plight of the threatened species. Along the way the trio and their endangered friend Bridget attracted strange glances and even the attention of one of the capital's biggest radio stations.

Speaking about the epic rhino-ride, Andrew said: "It was certainly an unforgettable experience. Cycling along busy Oxford Street was fantastic and Capital Radio did a phone-in where listeners could win a tenner by saying they had spotted the rhinocycle.

"A wheel broke just outside Cambridge then as we approached the Humber Bridge we had two wheel collapses and the trailer buggy wheel bearings broke."

Despite the troubles en route, the adventure has not put Andrew off doing it all over again.

"We are so determined to draw attention to the desperate plight of the rhino that we plan to take a Rhinocycle as far as Edinburgh next year."Bridget meets the Humber Bridge head on as rhinocycle' doesn't let a few mishaps stop her
