A housing prototype will be available for people to view in Wimbledon on Thursday.

The striking red Y:Cube housing unit has been on display behind the YMCA Wimbledon for several weeks but will now be open to the public to have a look inside.

It will be open from 10am to 2pm on Thursday, April 3.

The Y:Cube has been designed by architect practice Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners and provides self-contained and affordable starter accommodation for young people unable to either gain a first step on the housing ladder or pay the high costs of private rent.

Andy Redfearn, YMCA London South West’s director of development will be present and will answer any questions visitors have about the prototype, future plans for the project and the planned Y:Cube housing scheme in Mitcham.

It is hoped the first Y:Cube Housing scheme could open in Merton by the end of the year, providing 36 homes for people in housing need.

The planned scheme will be for single people who are former YMCA LSW residents and also offer homes to single people on the local council’s waiting list.

The one-bedroom homes will be let at 65 per cent of the market rent, which currently in Merton, is £140 a week.
