Discover Epsom and Ewell's secrets in summer walk series
Discover Nonsuch, Epsom Common and Horrible Ewell in a summer walk series organised by Bourne Hall.
On August 9, discover Ewell’s dark past and remember the tales that some would rather forget.
Learn about exploding gunpowder mills and visit the graveyard of St Mary’s where their victims lie. Hear the tales of local folk on witches and horrible murder, funerals without a body, tragic coach crashes and ghosts.
Visitors will also be able to tread in the footsteps of body snatchers, see where they plied their grisly trade and discover why a vicar pulled down his own church.
The tour will end with a visit to Ewell’s historic jail and a chance to find out first-hand what an 18th Century prison was like.
Meet at the main entrance to Bourne Hall for the walk which will take place at 10.30am to 12pm. An extra walk will be held on August 15 if the first is fully booked. £4 per person.
On August 22, explore the history behind the beautiful landscape of Nonsuch.
Visitors will be able to see where the original palace and its banqueting hall once stood and learn how it dominated the local area.
Hear stories of luxurious palaces, royalty, lost churches and ghosts and discover which famous television presenter’s ancestors used to live there and how a Queen once came to tea.
Meet on the lawn opposite the cafe in Nonsuch Mansion House for the walk which will take place at 10.30am to 12pm. £4 per person.
On August 28, take a walk round the ancient village of Stamford and the surrounding area of Epsom Common.
Visit the medieval landscape of Horton and the long-disappeared moated manor house. Discover Epsom’s importance to the defence of London in the event of a German invasion of Britain in World War Two and see where men would have been expected to stand to the last whilst facing Nazi tanks.
Visitors will also be able to see the impact of the Victorian policy of keeping patients with mental illnesses out of sight on Epsom’s landscape.
Meet by the pond on Stamford Green for the walk which will take place at 2pm to 4pm. An extra walk will be held on August 30 if the first is fully booked. £4 per person.
