Olympic champion gymnast Beth Tweddle will officially open Streatham’s rebuilt ice rink.

Tweddle is also an accomplished ice skater after winning ITV's Dancing On Ice and will run a master class at the new Ice and Leisure Centre after its unveiling on December 10.

The centre is open to the public from Monday, November 18, after three years of being redeveloped as part of the £26m Tesco Streatham Hub Scheme.

The ice rink, along with ice hockey team Streatham Redskins, was relocated to a disused car park site in Brixton despite considerable public opposition.

The new leisure centre has been built alongside a Tesco superstore and 200 new homes. The new facilities include:

  • An ice rink with 1,000 rink side seats;
  • A six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool;
  • A four court sports hall;
  • A 13-metre teaching pool;
  • 100 gym stations.

After planning approval was granted by Lambeth Council, it was understood jobs would be safeguarded for those held by workers at the old Streatham Ice Arena.

Councillor Lib Peck, the council leader, has hailed the Streatham Hub as "a triumph of design and construction.

She said: "It’s only the second time in the world that an ice rink has been built above a swimming pool.

"I know people will be very impressed when they see it.

"What’s really exciting is that this is more than a leisure centre, it’s created hundreds of homes and jobs too but none of it would have been possible without our partnership with Tesco.”
