The George Pub is, as a Wetherspoons outlet, pretty much the same as all the others you go to, but it serves an excellent use.

The decor is the same, the people seem the same, the drinks are the same and the food I imagine is the same as all the others.

Despite all that, this particular pub is actually pretty ideal. And here are the reasons why.

Picture the scenario. Fifteen good mates, heading out on the lash for a big Saturday night out.

It was pretty important that we fuelled up at a few pubs beforehand and these chosen locations have to have some important factors.

They have to be easily accessible. They have to be lively. And perhaps most importantly, they have to be cheap. Everything else can fall by the wayside. The George ticked all the boxes.

Sure it’s not somewhere to take your other half on a romantic date but that’s not its purpose.

Perfectly situated in the centre of Croydon by George Street tram stop, it is the ideal stop off point before going onto greater things.

Beer choice is good and cheap. Perfect. Then we have the atmosphere. Saturday night was pretty packed out. Everyone, including us, was there for the same reason; to drink the golden nectar as quick as possible before moving on.

The George, I suppose, is a bit like Watford Gap service station. Perfect for that much needed break to keep you going for the rest of the journey. I agree it is not the Ritz, or an idyllic country side tavern, but it is just there at the right place and usually the right time to supplement what is usually a great night out.
