One of the UK’s most successful songwriters and front-man of folk group The Levellers will perform an intimate gig at the Screamlounge next month, writes Victoria Bull.

Mark Chadwick, who co-wrote 20 chart singles and six Top 40 albums as part of the Brighton-based band, will perform at the acoustic evening alongside South London, folk-inspired bands Pistols at Dawn, The Frisbys and Yeti Love.

Chadwick’s debut solo album All the Pieces was released in September and is a personal collection of acoustic folk-tinged pop tracks recorded with some of the greatest folk musicians in the UK, including Equation’s Kathryn Roberts.

Chadwick said: "The album was inspired by Cat Stevens, Nick Drake and whole host of other lesser known names all of whom represent the myriad of lesser travelled paths that opened up somewhere between the break-up of the Beatles and the formation of Led Zeppelin."

The tracks, written over the last 20 years, tell Chadwick’s personal story, making the result different in many ways to a Levellers album.

"Lyrically I wanted to show another side to being in a band. As brilliant and exciting as it is, it also can also take a heavy personal toll," added Chadwick.

"So this album is autobiographical, beginning at the point where I first realised I was utterly besotted by music and ending where I am today."

Produced by the award-winning Sean Lakeman, the melodies and engaging lyrics that Chadwick will perform live will appeal to any fan of acoustic pop.
