Libraries across the borough are holding a vast range of events this Christmas.

Events include everything from a knitting class to Christmas story time and wreath design.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of the Environment and Neighbourhood Committee said: “During the build up to Christmas we have laid on a number of exciting events across the borough’s libraries for people of all ages.

“There is a real variety of options for local people to try and I hope each and every one of these sessions gets full up.”


Sutton Central Library: 020 8770 4700

1. Knit and Natter: Every Wednesday, 3.15-5.00pm – If you enjoy knitting or would like to learn join the Knit and Natter group.

2. Chess Club: Every Wednesday, meeting at 12noon in the Europa Gallery. All abilities welcome.


Carshalton Library: 020 8647 1151

1. The Pre-School Parent Book Club. One Friday a month, 10.30-11.30am (contact the library for exact date). A book club for people juggling young families and other commitments, who want to find time to engage with a good book. Choose from either a short or a long read each month and work towards completing the Six Book Challenge in the process. Talking about adult fiction whilst supervising young children. Toys and refreshments provided. 

2. Christmas Storytime Party: Wednesday 12th December, 10.00-11.00am. Come along for special Christmas crafts, stories, rhymes and refreshments. Tickets are 50p each and numbers will be limited. Speak to a member of staff for more information.

3. Community Snowflakes: Throughout December. To celebrate the library’s last Christmas at The Square make a paper snowflake, and add your fond memories of the library to it, before adding it to the display.

1. Cheam Christmas Event: Friday 7th December, 3.00pm – 9.00pm. Cheam Library will be joining the rest of Cheam Village in a Christmas extravaganza, including a visit from Father Christmas, a Jingle Bell storytime and a selection of festive colouring and craft.

2. Legomania: Friday 7th December, 6.15 – 7.15pm and 8.00 – 9.00pm. Grab a base board, a box of bricks and enjoy a world of creative possibilities. Tickets £3.50, for ages 5-10years.

3. Festive Creations: Wednesday 19th December 3-4pm, for ages 4-7years. Free event, but booking is required as places are limited.

4. Super Storytime: Every Wednesday, 9.40 – 10.40am. Stories, songs and rhymes, followed by a stay and play session for 0-3 yrs.

5. Simplified Education.  11+ Revision Classes in the Library every Saturday from 1.30 – 4.30. Contact Agnes on 07870 906047 for details. (term time only)

6. Scrabble Club. Every Tuesday 2.00pm-4.30pm. FREE. Come along and exercise your brain with our friendly Scrabble Club.
