London’s largest dedicated children’s book festival will return to Barnes this spring.

The Barnes Children’s Literature Festival from May 14 to 15 has doubled in size compared to its debut last year and will feature some of the biggest names in children’s writing among its nearly 50 events.

Run by volunteers, in association with Barnes Community Association and Barnes Bookshop, this year the line-up includes Michael Morpurgo, Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler, Anthony Browne and Morris Gleitzman.

This year also sees a new 500-seat ‘booktop’ tent at Barnes Pond and a series of events leading up to the main weekend, including a launch with Michael Morpurgo on May 7 and the CLPE Children’s Poetry Award launch on May 12.

Festival Director Amanda Brettargh said: “Barnes is a place that loves its books. There's a rich literary heritage here, one of London's best independent bookshops too, and our setting, under the magnificent trees around Barnes Pond, provides a literary experience like no

other.”
