If you fancy your tot to be a future Strictly Come Dancing professional, put on your best boogying shoes and hotfoot it to BABY LOVES DISCO at the Clapham Grand.
Aimed at parents and children between six months and seven, the event offers a chance for both baby and you to get your groove on in a safe, family environment.
Originating in the States before Naomi Timperley, UK Director & European Co-ordinator brought it across the pond, BABY LOVES DISCO has proved a massive success - with almost no advertising; “We rely on Mummy word of mouth, grass roots PR and online networking to sell tickets,” says Timperley. “We released tickets for the new season in June, four months before the event and they sold out in two weeks.”
With floor fillers ranging from the Jackson Five to Justin Timberlake both parents and children get the chance to strut their stuff; “Mums and Dads come from all over London, lots of them haven’t had the opportunity to go dancing in a long time!”
Herself mum to Elizabeth, three, and Olivia, five, Timperley’s family were born to dance;”My girls love to dance! We went to see Mamma Mia recently, they’re really into ABBA!”.
BABY LOVES DISCO’S popularity has risen with appearances on Dragon’s Den (they turned down the 40% investment offer), BBC Breakfast and in Red Magazine and The Sunday Times Style supplement; “I was a stay at home mum for years before bringing the events to the UK, I came across it completely by accident and persuaded the US Directors to let me launch here by finding good venues in both Manchester and London. I knew I didn’t want to work in an office again.”
The venues have to adhere to strict safety requirements and are child-proofed before the events. The £8 entry fee (its free to non walkers) includes some quality tunes, healthy snacks for children, bar snacks for adults, face painting and even Buggy Valet Parking!
“We have live DJs and some honestly say its the best gig they’ve ever done,” says Timperley. “Angelina Jolie has been to an event in the States and Madonna’s DJ has played, although I can’t confirm if she’s ever been herself!”
