Stage set for Lambeth Country Show

One of the UK’s largest free festivals is set to draw thousands of festival goers with attractions ranging from live music and owl displays to flower shows and stalls selling homemade jams.

The Lambeth Country Show, now in its 38th year, is going ahead this weekend after being reinstated following a wave of public protest over its cancellation because of the Olympics.

About 200 exhibitors and traders are expected at the show, which last year attracted about 180,000 revellers – the same number as Glastonbury.

Jamaican reggae star Anthony B, one of the headliners for Sunday night, said he was looking forward to performing.

He said: “It’s about families coming out and having a wonderful time and going home peacefully.”

Meanwhile owls, racing pigs, falcons, ferrets and jousting horses will grace the main arena throughout the weekend.

On top of this, more farm animals come to the city with donkey rides and sheep shearing as well as hive inspections.

In the flower zone there will attractions such as a scarecrow, recycled garden competitions and Bonsai exhibits.

Then the cultivate zone, devoted to arts, dance and culture, will have workshops such as knitting and belly dancing and performances including colourful khathak dancers.
