The many-differing landscapes of the world come into focus at Fountain Gallery this week when the work of local artists Mandana Khonsari and Lucinda Stephen are exhibited in Two Perspectives.

The display, which features 15 pieces from each artist, is part of a series of widely differing works set to illuminate the East Molesey gallery over the coming months.

While Stephen concentrates on urban landscapes, structures and architecture, Khonsari opts for a more nature-based approach, choosing to focus on the land itself.

She explains: "I usually paint landscapes based on the places I have visited.

"I always give the paintings ambiguous names, though, because as soon as I say where it is meant to be, it becomes a letdown for anybody who has actually been there!"

Iranian-born Khonsari moved to London in 1977 and is now based in Putney.

And her friendship and working relationship with Stephen has lasted the test of time.

She adds: "I was in an arts class with Lucinda back in the mid-80s and we have been in touch ever since.

"The reason why we are working together on this project is that they are completely different angles on the same theme.

"While they are different styles, they are still based on landscapes in their own way so that is why they are able to complement each other."

Khonsari took the gamble of quitting her full-time job to pursue a career in painting back in 2000. And, while she readily admits things have not been easy, she remains convinced it was a gamble that has paid off handsomely.

She concludes: "Artists always struggle but the last couple of years have been pretty good.

"I do not make a lot of money but I do break even and that is enough for me to continue."

Two Perspectives, Fountain Gallery, East Molesey, Until April 13, Tues-Sun 11.30am-5.30pm. Call 020 8941 5865.
