Few south west London bands can claim anywhere near the influence of the Yardbirds and they’re returning to their Twickenham roots with a special gig in Twickenham.

The world famous band helped launch the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page as well as having a string of hits of their own in the 1960s, including Over Under Sideways Down.

Shortly after the Rugby World Cup quarter finals at rugby HQ on Saturday, October 17, the band will play Clarendon Hall, York House prior to kicking off their tour of the USA.

The gig is part of Eel Pie Club’s special entertainment during the rugby tournament and Richmond Music and Drama Festival.

These days the band’s line-up includes original member Jim McCarty on drums and front man John Idan, who spent 15 years with the group and has recently returned. Another former Yardbird, Billyboy Miskimmin is also back on blues harp.

Opening acts for the gig are Peter Hammerton, formerly of 60s band The Others, and Rob Lynton, who played with Rupert’s People and featured on John Lennon’s Imagine album.

Doors open at 7pm and the music is from 8pm to 11pm. Tickets cost £25 in advance at eelpieclub.com or £30 on the door.
