William and the Outlaws are a brand spanking new band from Wimbledon. They play their first proper gig on home territory - The Watershed on February 27. KAte Finburg spoke to singer and manager, Jon Weeks.

KF: What’s with the weird name?

WATO: It’s from the Richmal Crompton book, Just William. We’re Rob, James and Jon, a bunch of mates from Wimbledon who decided to start a band and take over the world with our loud music!

KF: Fair enough, what’s your sound?

WATO: I love The Who, Led Zeppelin (Robs hair is modelled directly from a cast of Jimmy Page’s head) U2 and the White Stripes. I have been told I have a rather husky voice from too many cigarettes, so I sound like Bryan Adams mixed with Tom Waits!

KF: When did it all start?

WATO: We have been mates for years, playing in various bands together, but William and the Outlaws was formed in December 08 as we wanted to start something new!

KF: Have you got any groupies?

WATO: Rob and I are both married, so our wives are the only 2! James’ good looks ensure he is never left alone at gigs either!

KF: What’s been your funniest moment?

WATO: Playing our first ever William and the Outlaws gig to a home crowd, on arguably the smallest stage in South London - my head kept bashing into the ceiling lights and I kept knocking Rob on the head with my bass! There was the other time when Rob, who is a qualified physicist had the amp, which he had built, on 11, and as we were playing really loud the amp blew up! We have now resorted to using professional gear, it makes the insurance cheaper as well!

KF: Have you any singles/EPs/albums?

WATO: We are demo-ing our debut album, and hope to have it finished within a few months, but have not set a release date! We aim to release a single over the summer.

KF: What song you wish you had written? And who do you despise in music?

WATO: My Generation by the Who, it only has two chords, but is a brilliant song. I think Rob would have written anything by Led Zep, and James just wants to be Keith Moon! I can’t stand any of the manufactured pop groups, except Girls Aloud, they are amazing!

KF: What's the band's dream?

WATO: It was to be featured in your newspaper, but now that we have achieved that, we are aiming for world domination!

KF: There is nothing better than being in this paper. How can we get in touch with you?

WATO: Our website williamandtheoutlaws.com. It is always being updated, you can also check out myspace.com/williamandtheoutlaws. Our next gig is on February 27 at 8pm at the Watershed, Wimbledon.

KF: Thankyou William. Music lovers, you can buy tickets from watershedlive.com.
