Saturday was Sir Elton John/Whitney Houston theme night on X Factor and that prompted some lively comment on Twitter.

Many viewers expressed their fears at the prospect of having their favourite songs mauled by the wannabes, while others backed the praise given to the acts for the most part by the judges.

Ben Haenow’s attempt at Whitney Houston’s legendary I Will Always Love You was unpopular with some of the judges – Mel B said he did it too much like a rock song, while Cheryl Fernandez-Versini said taking a risk like that at this stage of the competition was “kind of crazy”.

However he had some fans.

Only The Young won some plaudits from the judges but not everyone liked their version of Sir Elton John’s Something About The Way You Look Tonight – and in the end they were voted off the show.

Purists pointed out that I’m Every Woman, performed by Fleur East, was not originally a song by Houston – it was a hit for Chaka Khan when Houston was still a teenager.

Former judge David Walliams showed that he was missing being on the programme by tweeting this about Fleur East

And Only The Young will be missed by some.
