Spock’s legacy is set to live long now that a Kickstarter campaign for a documentary about him has prospered.

Late Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy’s son Adam Nimoy started the campaign on the fundraising website to back a documentary film, For The Love Of Spock, about his father and has raised over the $600,000 target.

According to Variety, the film will coincide with Star Trek’s 50th anniversary as it first aired on September 8 1966, and will be narrated by Zachary Quinto, who played the character in the last two Star Trek films.

Adam said of the campaign: “Rest assured: every dollar raised through this campaign will find its way to funding this film or helping in the promotion and advertising campaign. But the more we can raise, the better the end product will be. This film is a once in a lifetime chance and I want to give it all I have to give.”

He went on: “The funding of this film through Kickstarter will enable us to continue with production – which will mostly take the form of filming interviews of Dad’s friends, colleagues and family members.

“It will also enable us to license the hundreds of film clips and still photographs of Mr Spock as he has appeared on television and in feature films over the last 50 years.

“Funding will then buy us time in the editing room, where I will be poring over the film clips and photographs and never-before-seen home movies as well as Star Trek artefacts – some of which have not seen the light of day for nearly 50 years!”

Backers for the documentary are offered premiums ranging from updates about the project to T-shirts and replica phaser weapons, depending on how much they pledge. Of the thousands of backers, six have paid top premiums offered at $10,000 to become an associate producer, taking all of the chances available for the opportunity to produce.

Leonard Nimoy died at the end of February and Adam announced his intention to make the documentary a month later, starting the Kickstarter campaign, which is due to end today, on June 3.

TV director Adam has previously worked on NYPD Blue, The Practice, Ally McBeal and Gilmore Girls.
