Kingston Carnival is back on Sunday for its 15th year and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Here’s what you need to know…

Happy birthday

This year is the 15th Kingston Carnival, organised as ever by Kingston Race and Equalities Council (KREC). It is the largest multicultural street parade, it is suitable for all ages and it’s free.

It started in 2000 but the celebration two years ago was cancelled over fears too many people would crowd in to see The Specials' frontman Neville Staple.

The procession

Hopefully you are still in the Olympic spirit because this year the procession is Rio themed. Considering Rio throws the world’s biggest and most colourful carnival every year that surely gives us something to look forward to. There is also a focus on green issues.

Expect plenty of bright costumes and music and fun, departing from the Guildhall at noon.

On the main stage

As with last year – which featured Akala and Beans on Toast – there is no official headliner.

There is, however, a full afternoon of music for everyone on the main stage in Market Place from 1.30pm through to the 7pm curfew, organised by Banquet Records.

Having played Notting Hill Carnival and Boomtown festival, The Heatwave know how to create a party atmosphere. They play from 5.30pm with a mixture of reggae, bashment, dancehall and mash-ups.

Former Lightyear frontman Chas Palmer-Williams plays at 4.30pm and indie-rockers Martha are up at 3.30pm.

Guildford-based ska-punk band The JB Conspiracy, who have played in Kingston with Reel Big Fish and Neville Staple, are on just after 2.30pm.

Stage two

Jazz band The Tony Heiberg Quintet and Brazilian samba reggae from Tribo Band are among the entertainment headed for the second stage.

You won’t go hungry

Alongside the procession, music and entertainment expect lots of food, drink and stalls.
