A triple bill of new drama tackles the fallout from the referendum, the tension of the Dragons’ Den and the bizarre life story of an ageing magician.

Staged at Surbiton’s cornerHOUSE arts centre under the banner Unexpected Items in Bagging Area, the shows are performed on October 6, 7 and 8 at 8pm.

They have all been written by Surbiton playwright Tim Harrison, who has been the Douglas Road arts centre’s pantomime dame for 30 years, and are all being performed in the round as the auditorium is reconfigured for the occasion.

“I’ve always loved stage magicians and thought it would be interesting to take an audience through the highs and lows of an entertainer’s career,” said Tim.

“And as everyone still seems to be coming to terms with the implications of the referendum vote, it seemed a natural subject for a new play as well.”

Trolley & Basket is a comedy about the Brexit vote, as two shoppers discuss how their lives could change.

I’m Out is a twist on the TV show Dragons’ Den, which sees the tables turned on the entrepreneurs.

The Great Gandolfo is the third play on the evening’s bill, telling the tale of an old performer coming to the end of his working life and looking back with mixed emotions on a career of baffling audiences and conjuring up rabbits.

Yaz Nixon directs the three shows, fresh from her success as director of the highly rated Come Fly With Me play in the arts centre’s recent one-act festival.

“The plays are funny, poignant and above all entertaining,” said Yaz. “Doing them in the round, with a small company of actors, means that the audience is right in the thick of things!”

Tickets cost £8 (£6 concs) from ticketsource.co.uk/gandolfo
