A mass of applications has been whittled down to the very best, and the choreographers set to lead the Ignition Dance Festival have been announced before its return to Kingston next month.

Just seven of the 725 applicants were chosen, and they will bring with them an array of styles to the Rose Theatre on June 16 for the festival’s fourth year.

The choreographers include Maria Yacoob, contemporary duo Eleanor Perry and Daniel Hay Gordon, Dane Hurst, Casson & Friends, Holly Noble, Henri Oguike and Kathak quartet Urja.

Ignition is supported by Arts Council England and Kingston Council, and produced by DanceWest, a west London community dance organisation.

Rosie Whitney-Fish, director of DanceWest, said: “Ignition is a unique festival – our specially designed career development package provides a productive environment to create new choreography. We were delighted with the number of high quality applications which demonstrates an appetite and importance of a festival of this kind.”

DanceWest has also provided four £500 bursaries for emerging dance companies and young artists to create and showcase work for the shows in June.

Of the four recipients, two will perform at the Rose Theatre on June 17: Ania Straczynska and third year Kingston University student Francesca Wall.

There will also be shows at the Lyric, Hammersmith, on June 3.
