Get on the dancefloor

Even before Diversity won Britain's Got Talent last year, street and hip hop dancing had begun taking over the world with films about struggling youngsters from the hood coming good on the dance floor popping up all over the place.

That in turn spawned a gaggle of grassroots programmes getting people into dancing and this Friday at Fairfield Halls many of those will have the chance to show off their moves in dance competition Get It On The Floor.

Now in its third year, the competition is split into three categories, one for community groups, one for the more established acts you've seen on programmes such as Britain's Got Talent and Got To Dance and one for freestylers who can come along and strut their stuff.

"It's a dance competition that aims to bridge the gap between community dance groups and well established groups," says organiser and brainchild of the whole idea, Leanne Pero.

"The competition side is only part of it, it's more to get people out there, meeting others and sharing what they can do.

"In previous years we have seen people come back in established groups having been in the community groups the year before.

"This year we have all sorts of dancers, not just street and hip hop.

"There are African dancers and Caribbean dancers and we always have a contemporary ballet group."

The show will be hosted by professional dancer Kymberlee Jay with a special appearance by UK Unsigned award-winning poet Realitie.

Got To Dance finalists Alias will be showcasing their dance moves, as will Good for the Hood finalist Wacky Rymel and artists Retaliation and Emotionz.

Get It On The Floor, Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, August 27, 7pm, £10. Call 020 8688 9291 or visit fairfield.co.uk.
