All is not what it seems in the picture-perfect village of Featherington-on-the-Wold.

It is the home of domestic goddess Rosie Thorn, the comic creation of actress and writer Eleanor Appleton.

Rosie prides herself on perfection in all areas of her life.

As a model resident of the village she asks for little in return, although the Queen of the May crown was always appreciated.

But when she is usurped by a younger model an inner rage fills every fibre of her being.

What follows is a macabre comedy as Marjorie Jam, Master Scone, Dr Cremeclot and Lauren Buttercup meet their fate as Rosie exacts her revenge.

The dark and twisted tale of Rosie Thorn - Butter Would Not Melt, is Appleton's debut one-woman show, which she is taking to this year's Edinburgh Fringe.

But she needs to raise £15,000 and is appealing for sponsorship and donations.

Appleton, who grew up in Croydon, created the character in 2006 when she appeared in a play called The Powder Room at the Edinburgh Fringe.

“She was very, very girly with a high-pitched voice, a bit like Queenie from Blackadder.

“I thought about the character and somehow it evolved into this 50s red-lipsticked character.”

She devised a half-hour sketch show before writing the full-length play in 2009, which follows Rosie’s antics from start to finish.

But while Rosie is competitive and a perfectionist in everything she does Appleton says she only exhibits those traits when it comes to acting.

“When you have written something and you perform it I suppose there must be elements of you in it,” she adds. “We all go along in our lives in this socially acceptable way – well most of us.

“The good thing about writing is that you can put in things that you wouldn’t say.”

Appleton is bringing Rosie to Croydon's Scream Lounge next week in the run-up to Edinburgh and has further dates lined up in July.
