An operatic double will welcome classical music lovers for the beginning of the Fairfield Halls 2012/13 season.

Englebert Humperdinck (the German composer rather than the Eurovision crooner) ‘s Hansel and Gretel takes the classic fairy tale and brings all the dark twists together in a folk-music inspired opera.

From witches to fairies and ovens and broomsticks, the tale of two children cast out by their parents into the woods is masterfully told through unforgettable songs.

First played in London almost 120 years ago, the show has continued to be worldwide success.

With a translation by David Pountney the show will be put on by the Co-Opera Company Orchestra.

Backing up this performance the following night the Co-Opera will stage its new production of the famous Don Giovanni.

One of Mozart’s greatest operas the story tells of the rakish Spanish noble man Don Giovanni, as he lies cheats and seduces his way through a horrified cast.

The litany of his misdeeds eventually come back to haunt him and he is dragged down to hell.

Full of salacious detail and just deserts the production is also known for some of the most recognisable and loved songs of all time.

Opera lovers will enjoy the duet of seduction, La ci darem la mono, the Catalogue Aria and Donna Anna’s heart-breaking Non mi dir.

On one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide Co-Opera Co will stage David Parry’s English translation, conducted by Tim Murray under the directorship of William Relton.
