THINGS have certainly changed for Nine Inch Nails since the band's debut album Pretty Hate Machine took the industrial music world by storm nearly 20 years ago.
Trent Reznor started with a bleak view of the world back in the late 80s and it just got bleaker with the release of The Downward Spiral.
Even though the angst-fuelled lyrics have remained constant, the music has shied away from the hard-metal style that defined the band in the early 90s, moving in a more progressive, and some might even say chilled-out, direction.
Year Zero sounds a lot like the band's last album, With Teeth, and fans of that will almost certainly like this just as much.
However, if you, like me, prefer the heavier tone of earlier albums such as Broken, you may be in for a disappointment.
