A 36-year-old man who smeared his own excrement inside train carriages has been detained indefinitely in a secure mental hospital.

Bonney Eberendu of no fixed abode, defecated on trains to purge himself of inner voices urging him to stab women and children, a court was told.

Over a three month period he caused damage on trains throughout the south of England, including services travelling to London Bridge via Croydon.

Eberendu pleaded guilty to one count of having an offensive weapon and six charges of causing criminal damage across the railway network when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court today.

He also asked for a further 29 criminal damage offences to be taken into consideration.

Judge Christopher Elwen, sentencing, said the offences were revolting and that Eberendu remained a risk to the public.

He ordered him to be indefinitely detained in a secure mental hospital.

British Transport Police PC Donna Fox said: "It was a highly unusual case and one that was only solved thanks to feedback from members of the public to our police appeal."
