More Labour councillors ready to defect, Tory leader claims

| Council leader Mike Fisher claims more Labour councillors are ready to leave the party |
The leader of Croydon Council claims there are more Labour councillors ready to ditch their political allegiances to join his group after a town hall switch this week.
In what was being called "snatch of the day" by some, Labour councillor Mike Mogul moved from the red benches to the blue at the weekend.
His former group leader Councillor Tony Newman claimed he had sacked Coun Mogul but his new group boss, Councillor Mike Fisher said his man had resigned first.
Coun Mogul, a West Thornton ward member, said he joined the Conservatives after becoming disillusioned with the Labour leadership.
He told the Croydon Guardian the final straw came after a planning meeting when he was blasted with an expletive ridden rant by a former colleague who was angry he had left the meeting at the request of Coun Newman and forfeited a vote on an important planning application.

His beaming new counterparts could barely contain their glee as he was unveiled at a press conference at the town hall yesterday.
Coun Mogul said it had been a hard decision to leave the Labour Party after 40 years but he was looking forward to working with Coun Fisher.
Coun Mogul said: "I want to work with professional people who care about Croydon."

| 'Snatch of the day': Councillor Mike Mogul has joined Croydon Conservatives |
Coun Fisher said: "I am very pleased that Mike Mogul has had the courage to stand up for what he believes is right.
"There are more in the Labour group who are unhappy with the leadership and I expect there are some who could join our group in the future."
But Labour leader Tony Newman said: "The Labour Party has taken this action after receiving information that Councillor Mogul has been meeting in secret with the Conservatives and working with them to undermine hard working Labour councillors."

Mike Mogul is indeed a prize snatch. Well done to the Guardian for keeping up standards and refraining from using the c-word.

Clr Mogol supports the deep cuts in funding for local groups & the lack of new social housing in the Croydon Town centre where does he & Clr Fisher expect essential workers to live?

Tories caring about Croydon. Don't make me laugh!
Lets look at planning, Cllr Mogul. You obviously want to see those on lower incomes excluded from the town centre. You are happy with double standards with over-development in your ward and the rest of the North and refusals for developments in the South. You are comfortable with the hypocritical Tories - who say that they are against 'backland developments' and then actually put in a planning application to do precisely that on the Conservative North Association premises in Cllr Mogul's own ward!
And this is without mentioning shutting two schools, slashing services for the vulnerable and all the other cuts.
And as for professional - lets look at the shambles of the parking contract, the crisis in a number of schools, the failure to manage the patch-up of South Norwood Pool and all the other foul-ups.
Croydon Tories do care - but only about themselves, not about the people of Croydon!

Pity he didn't think about that ten or so years ago as Newman's nerds wrecked the Borough of Croydon, making it worse than some third world townships....

And things are about to get worse with the credit crunch. And on top of that anyone on around £150-a-week will be paying double Income Tax from 5 April- they'll be paying tax at 20p in the pound as opposed to 10p at present. No wonder the gap between rich and poor is wider than ever. Labour- don't make me laugh!
