Police target dangerous driving on the A23
Dangerous drivers in Croydon are being targeted as part of a four-week police operation.
Met Police launched Operation Radar today which will see traffic officers target drivers who use hand-held mobiles, motorists not wearing their seat belts and speeding cars on the A23.
The operation is being conducted in partnership with Transport for London's Road Safety Unit and Croydon Road Safety Partnership.
In the three years to the end of 2007 there have been 497 people hurt in road accidents on the A23, including four killed and 51 seriously injured.
| “This operation is designed to act as a deterrent to people who continue to flaunt road traffic laws which exist for the safety of all road users." | | Chief Inspector Dave McLaren |
|
The A23 accounts for more than 13 per cent of the borough's total road traffic casualties.
Drivers caught speeding or using a hand-held mobile will receive three points and a £60 fine.
Chief Inspector Dave McLaren, of the Met's Traffic Operational Command Unit, said: "This operation is designed to act as a deterrent to people who continue to flaunt road traffic laws which exist for the safety of all road users.
"When statistics show that there were 225 fatal collisions in London last year, work such as this is vital in preventing death and serious injury on London's roads."

If the intention was for this to make a difference they wouldn't pre-warn people, as they will just change their habits for the next 4 weeks. If the same person isn't pre-warned, is pulled over, and is given the appropriate penalty they will probably think twice next time.
If they want to catch people on mobiles just stand on the Brighton Road for 10 minutes and see how many people drive past using their mobile phone. Or maybe stand on one of the cut-through roads like Hailing Park Road with a speed gun.

OK, so a greater police pressence is needed to generate more income from Drivers - Whereas the headlines today are in relation to stabbings / rapes etc in the Croydon area?
mmmmmmmm, let me get this straight., they are more able (& willing) to stand together & point a radar at passing cars that generates them money, than do real police work & catch the offenders that committed the crimes reported on today??? Funny that?
Maybe I am inthe wrong job, a Policemans life is looking rather appealing now I know they dont have to do real work..

Stupid child!! Have you ever had to deal with an accident caused by a speeding car? I once had to hold a woman who had blood gushing out of her eyes, mouth and ears - her husband's head was lying over hers with one eye popping out and there was a dead dog at her feet. She died in my arms and then - in order to keep her husband's hopes up, I told him she was fine. Ambulances were on strike, and I had to wait for an army ambulance to arrive. We need police to stop speeding - it kills.

Thanks again Anne for proving your complete ignorance of real life - "stupid Child" refers to somone uneducated uner the age of 16, well sorry to disapoint you, I am neither & as for you telling a man his wife was alive when she wasnt??? Do you perhaps watch too much CSI????
They have clearly stated they are targeting minor crimes - such as obile phone usage. In the figures used by the MET themselves, these minor crimes are a very small percentage of the overall crime figures & are NOT what the public want funding spent on - We want our money & our police force concentrating on making the streets safer by catching rapists, muggers, people who carry knives & Guns - However in your leafy suburb I am certain nothing of the above nature ever happens!

We all also want money spent on tackling anti-social behaviour as well as speeding, using mobile phones while driving, etc.

I had thought this person was using NWA to describe the Neighbourhood Watch Association, but when I looked it up it was some ghastly pop group calling themselves "NIGGAZ WITH ATTITUDE" who sing anti-police rubbish. It is NOT a money making scheme to stop people from speeding. It is a way of avoiding accidents. Having held a dying woman who had blood pouring out of her eyes, eyes and mouth because of someone speeding and crashing into her car, I think the police are doing a wonderful job here and the more people they stop the better.
