Keep the noise down or face the Party Patrol
 |
| Councillor Steve O'Connell |
Lovers of loud music will have to keep the volume down to avoid a visit from Croydon's Noisy Party Patrol.
The Croydon Council patrol will be keeping an ear out for loud parties and responding to complaints between 11pm and 3am on Saturday nights between now and the end of September.
The patrol which is supported by the police can serve legal notices on anyone who refuses to respond to requests to turn the noise down.
Failure to comply with the notice can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000.
In the most serious cases music equipment can be seized.
Councillor Steve O'Connell, cabinet member for safety and cohesion, said: "The summer months usually see an increase in the number of complaints we receive and the majority concern people's parties.
| "However, while we don't want to spoil people's fun, we will take enforcement action when people refuse to take notice of our request for them to comply with the law.” | | Councillor Steve O’Connell |
|
"Most people aren't aware of the noise they are making and are happy to lower the volume when they receive a visit from our patrol.
"However, while we don't want to spoil people's fun, we will take enforcement action when people refuse to take notice of our request for them to comply with the law."
Anyone wanting to complain about noise from a party on a Saturday night should contact the council on 020 8686 4433.
For further information or to speak to an environmental health officer Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm call 020 8760 5483.

I hope we are going to have a Noisy Builders' Patrol as well. We haven't been able to have our usual lunch parties out in the garden for years because of loud drilling and banging. I have never understood why DIY noises are acceptable and fun noises are not.

Well Anne, from your ivory tower spare a thought for those of us that cannot afford a house and garden and have to live in flats where we are subjected to both types ofnoise and late into the night. Also last ime my neighbour was playing loud music to Community support officers walked past ignoring the noise and doing a little jig to the beat, pathetic!!!

I have afforded my house and garden due to my own hard work, as it happens. In between marriages, when I was on my own, I had a day time job and a teaching job 3 nights a week, plus private pupils on Saturdays. I never said you should have to tolerate party noises - and party noises are nothing to do with PCSOs - it is the Council's Environmental Pollution Dept. that deals with noise. PCSOs are looking for crime, not noise.

Pathetic, why don't you work a bit harder, then you might be able to afford one of your own

Er, so what happens if the noisy party is on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday?

Noise of any sort can be extremely debilitating for many people and loud music is one of the worst offenders.
Building & DIY noise can irritate too of course, but often this type of noise pollution is during the day and has to be accepted, but noisy neighbours and their [bold]blaring "music"[/bold] is totally out of order. It is just selfish and anti-social.
[bold]All noise after 11 pm should be stamped on very firmly, on ANY day.[/bold]

Firstly Anne Giles is extremely quick to criticise others on here and secondly i have a reasonbly well paid job and my wife also works. Sasha you know NOTHING about me so keep it shut!!! for information this government has made it impossible for working couples to do anything, if i was claiming benefits then maybe i would be abler to buy somewhere as i would not have to cover the other bills that i currently struggle to pay. Noise eefects us all and complaining that you can't sit in your garden when some of us are not as fortunate is hardly the point.

I haven't criticised anyone. I have merely stated how I can afford things through my own hard work. Secondly, everyone who has a garden has a right to sit in it. Fortunately, the Noise Pollution Officer does agree with me, and he has on several occasions sent warning letters to people who employ building contractors before 8 a.m. and after 2 p.m. on Saturdays or at any time on a Sunday or a Bank Holiday. It is illegal.

Anne Giles stated, "and party noises are nothing to do with PCSOs - it is the Council's Environmental Pollution Dept. that deals with noise. PCSOs are looking for crime, not noise"
Absolutely correct! (For once).
Since the removal of the 'Noise and Vibration Act 1972 (where only one had to complain) all noise is a matter for the local Councils, usually by means of Bye-Laws.

I can sympathise with Upper Norwoodian, I lived in a flat for 7 years with a young child and had to put up with loud noise most days morning noon & night till 4 am, then get up for work and get my child to nusery/school. I could have committed murder by the time I moved out.
As I write this there is some inconsiderate householder who believes it is ok to have a dj at a party with music that can be heard way down the road. Nearly 4 hrs it has been going on with no idea when it will end. It's making me feel quite ill now.
