We need your help to stop knife crime, say police
Blunt message: Chief Superintendent Mark Gore says police will press for the toughest penalties against people caught carrying knives
Blunt message: Chief Superintendent Mark Gore says police will press for the toughest penalties against people caught carrying knives

Croydon needs to unite and take a stand against knife crime because the police cannot tackle the problem on their own, according to Borough Commander, Mark Gore.

Police are ratcheting up an operation to crack down on knife crime, but they need the support of the borough to help stem a wave of senseless murders.

Police in Croydon will be using portable arches and handheld metal detectors to stop and search youths suspected of carrying knives.

Chief Superintendent Gore said searches, which are controversial because of their association with unpopular policing methods used in the 1980s, will be random but based on intelligence.

They will also ask courts to give the maximum sentences for people charged with carrying a knife - which is currently four years in prison for youths and five for adults.

Chief Supt Gore said: "If you are a young person and you know that this level of enforcement activity is taking place you are less likely to carry weapons across the borough. With everyone who is arrested, we will be looking for the strongest penalty that we can get."

The operation began last Friday. Police stopped and searched people at East and West Croydon stations, Thornton Heath, Selhurst and Norwood Junction. They stopped 41 people on Saturday and 27 people on Sunday, but did not find any weapons.

Chief Supt Gore said he did not want to criminalise young people and their co-operation, as well as that of the community, was essential.

"In the past if there was an altercation it might be settled with fists," he added.

"With everyone who is arrested, we will be looking for the strongest penalty that we can get.”
Chief Superintendent Mark Gore

"These days with more young people carrying knives for protection, a knife might be used which is far more serious.

"Knife crime is our biggest fear here. Sometimes we find that young people are reluctant to come forward and provide evidence. "We want to work with them to ensure that they have the confidence to come forward so that we can prosecute those committing these acts."

Mr Gore said police would consider carrying out searches inside schools, with the co-operation of teachers.

A 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the head with a pair of scissors at Edenham High in Shirley on February 27 and an 18-year-old boy was stabbed at Croydon College on February 5.

The college recently carried out a survey where 69 per cent of students said knife crime was their main concern. The findings are due to be presented to Chief Supt Gore this week.

Omar Hassalini, 20, a student, said: "The kid who was stabbed was from my class. It's the gang culture and the knife culture from outside the college.

"No one wants to stitch anyone else up, it's just the code that you follow. In most cases we know who the trouble makers are but don't want to come forward because you are fearful for the consequences for yourself and your family.

"When you are connected in that way - if you are involved in street gangs - when you are caught in the middle, there is no getting out of it."

Good luck Mark!! Let's see some action. My message to all teenagers is - do not be afraid to come forward. Police will not pass your name on to anyone and you have nothing to fear. We have had teenagers in my area passing on information for quite a few years and all have been looked after.

well get more police men on the streets & do more stop & search

Of course "the police cannot tackle the problem on their own": they need our "representatives" in Westminster to stop half the Third World flocking here; that would be a good start!

Why has it taken so long for the Chief of Police in Croydon to
admite that crime reduction in Croydon has not been the prime target of HIS force since he took charge? i.e "we nead your help...to stop crime"
up untill today he has always stated that crime in croydon is comming DOWN...whis we all know is a lie!!!
We need the police to interact with the citizens of Croydon and take note of our fear of crime that is enlarged by the police failing to do the job they were set by Parliment over theyears...that is to catch criminals no matter who they are no matter how old they are no matter what the reasoning & for them to stop trying to be social workers.

The parent(s) of this knife weilding scum need to be sterilised to make sure they don't pop out more apprentice knife fighters before they reach the menopause.

What does it take for a parent to ask their offspring a few questions or look for weapons? Nothing at all.

A separate offence of Incorrect parenting should be created so when the offending offspring goes down the rest of the family follow.

It is amazing that so many parents haven't a clue how to raise their children. I have had a family of foxes living in my back garden since early April. Watching this doting mother caring for her 3 cubs is amazing. No-one has taught her parenting skills. She tends to their every need and fetches food for them - popping it into their hungry mouths. She constantly checks that they are all present and correct and calls out if any are missing. She defends them against any other animal (including my dog) that may dare to venture anywhere near them. Yet how many human parents do not sit with their children at the table to eat - just go off to the pub and leave them to fend for themselves - never worrying about who they are with and what time they get home. I thought caring for one's young was an instinct - and if animals have it - why not humans???

The problem with croyboy is that he's like an old 45 vinyl single. There's only one song on each side. "England for the English" on the A-side, and the B-side rarely gets played (although i suspect it's "There'll Always Be An England").

I'm guessing he's probably never been abroad either, and experienced other cultures. So instead he sits in his "castle" in Croydon (what a culture capital!) and views everyone with a different skin colour, or those who speak another language, through xenophobic glasses.

This comment surely makes you as prejudiced as Croyboy. People from some other countries do not actually have a RIGHT to be here, and should therefor act with the good grace of a visitor/guest in this country. Jock, you don't have to travel to experience other cultures. I have come across various cultures in my home town and have embraced most of them. Croyboy has a point that some peoples cultures are causing problems, or maybe just the sheer mix of them.Incidentally, I sit with my children each night to eat dinner. I am English but not a yob and not in the process of rearing any yobs. As for negative comments, sometimes the truth is negative.

Yes, Anne, I must admit I have a problem: for some reason when I see photos of violent criminals in this area, it looks to me like nine out of ten
of them have suntans! ...Or is it only me?
And as Sam (above) has kindly pointed out, plenty of "people from other countries" do not "have a right to be here". For example, the only asylum seekers who should be in the UK would be from Ireland: those from every other country have far closer havens.

Jock said - still smarting, I suspect, from a (metaphorical!) bloody nose I give him recently - said, referring to me:

Well, you guess wrong. In fact, even as I type this I'm at the Ends of the Earth, where I've been for the past five weeks.
As for "everyone with a different skin colour, or those who speak another language", I wish them the best of luck, but we simply don't need them (en masse) here, that's all. "Finite resources", "limited space", "social incompatiblity", "rising prices of raw materials", "drought" - ever heard of these things, Jock?

CROYBOY... COME HOME!!

Again... slagging matches... *sigh*

Heres the bottom line... 70% of crime that goes on in Croydon is caused or involves people that ARNT BRITISH. Wether they be directly not born in this country or parents not born here. Ive seen so many times that the british government are letting the true british spirit slip. What celebrations did the government put on for St. Georges day... But yet there is a HUGE mela festival in Lloyds park in the summer.

Heres a statement you can all quote me on "The british government are so scared of looking racist that they have forgotten about the British people... forgotten what it is to be British!"

Knife crime is caused by the "gang warfare" or should i say the "bronx wannabe's" MOST of the people involved in all this fit into one of a few categorys...

1: hip hop/ rap culture kids wanting to be like 2pac. MOST of the people in this culture seem to be NON-British and when i say "non-british" i mean old school britian... white britain.

2: 'British' kids TRYING oh so hard to be 'Non-British'...

Knife crime will be around as long as the parents dont REALLY give a sh1t about what their kids get up to!!!

Of course you can "respectfully suggest" whatever you like; that's one of our most treasured rights: free speech. However, I have no connection by birth or culture to where I am at present - unlike yourself and Argentina, Anne.

I Agree with croyboy, and im a turkish cypriot by blood, and a proud 3rd generation british citizen whos brother is currently serving in the british army. As soon as the english once again learn to be proud of there nation and not feel like pathetic politically correct morons who freeLY slap on the racist label and say yes to every demand made to them by other races as not to upset them and act in fear to anyone who points out a negative point of anothers culture, that is when things will start to change,

if we want INTERGRATION, AND EQUALITY LETS NOT SEPARATE AND SEGREGATE OURSELVES
dont have MOBO AWARDS,BLACK HISTORY MONTH,EBONY MAGAZINE,

why are these any less equal or racist than having,e.g mowo awards, white magazine, white history month?

why can we not celebrate "HUMANITIES" HISTORICAL AND CREATIVE ACHEIVEMENTS? TOGETHER, WE ALL MADE OF FLESH AND BONE RIGHT?

e.g.. do not celebrate music containing the words "nigga" left right and centre, and boasting criminal violence by accepting it as youth culture, all these are these are black, caribbean, african culture that we embrace with open arms despite it being such a negative attitude,i question why?
family values and respect is non-existent and its people like ANNE GILES,whos naive tolerance that allow and encourage for such things to happen.
Im sad to say this country is spiralling out of control and may be too late for the natives to take back the reigns, i and my family are willing to die for england, although it seems pure blood english are not...solidarity is needed, i stand with you all who have had enough of the state of this country.

The victim of the drive-by shooting in question is described as being "Asian", which leads me to suspect that rather than a "racially-motivated attack" (What's called "mugging" if the victim is white), this is most probably intra-immigrant violence, albeit using guns not knives. ...But that's the next stage, isn't it?

The gentleman's name does indeed have nothing to do with it; however, the background and values which that name suggests do.
Are you naturally that disingenuous Anne, or did you study for it?

Oh yes, and my suspicions of this were due to experience and previous observations, rather than "a vivid imagination". Result: I was right!

Background and values have nothing to do with one's name, race or nationality. For example, many English children and teenagers, as we know, are allowed to misbehave, do graffiti, get drunk, stay out half the night, ride scooters antisocially, not sit at the table with their parents and eat properly, etc. etc. Whereas Asian families, Afro-Caribbean families, Brazilian and other Latin American families are very, very strict and extremely family orientated. They just won't stand any nonsense.

1/ I never mentioned "race"
2/ One's name is an indication of one's background, nationality and culture, from which it is possible to draw some conclusions with a fair degree of accuracy - as I did in this case!

Wrong again. My name is Giles and that doesn't mean that I am related to Farmer Giles, nor have I ever worked on a farm. Try barking up a different tree. If I called myself Hu Flung Dung it wouldn't indicate that I owned a Chinese restaurant either. If I was Ama Al Shahid, it also wouldn't indicate that I always wore a Burka. If I was Angela Maria Gonzalez de Toledo it might mean that I was Spanish, but not necessarily a Catholic with ten children. Point taken??
