Police used metal detectors to search Purley school kids for knives as they boarded a bus yesterday.

The exercise, part of Operation Blunt, was led by Sergeant Trevor Jenner of the Purley Safer Neighbourhood Team and took place at a Brighton Road bus stop near Purley Cross yesterday afternoon.

It is not a short-term whirlwind offensive against knives. It is a sustained visible long-term operation and it is vital to recognise that we cannot hope to succeed by police work alone.

Boris Johnson

No knives were found during the hour-long operation which saw around 200 youths go through the detectors.

Fifty were searched for setting off the scanners after setting metal items to one side.

About 20 police and community support officers were involved in the operation.

Yesterday the Met announced officers have stopped and searched nearly 27,000 youths since the operation began and seized 528 knives.

There have been 1,214 arrests, 813 of which were for possession of weapons and a further 217 for knife-related crimes.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "It is not a short-term whirlwind offensive against knives. It is a sustained visible long-term operation and it is vital to recognise that we cannot hope to succeed by police work alone."

This was very effective when carried out at Merton College. Keep them coming!

Good!!! But dont just use them in schools, they should be used at tram stops, not just busy ones either as these gangs hang around anywhere. they should be used randomly in entrances to shops and mcdonalds etc, randomly anywhere. and not just school kids. a lot of these gangs are aged 16 and over and so not in school, they just hang around causing trouble, robbing people, stabbing people, intimidating people etc

I couldn't agree more. This needs to be done on a regular basis in all secondary schools across the country.

I've just been talking about this to a lecturer at Merton College. Apparently the bright sparks saw the METAL detector and turned around and walked the other way, arrousing the many many police officers suspicions. Turns out they had no metal on them but they thought the metal detector would go off because they had drugs in their pockets!

Just shows the mentality!

C, this is Merton College!!!
At my partners sisters school, they sent out letters to tell the parents that they will do it between certain dates.
Though this was a bit silly cos any kids with knifes just wont take them between those dates!!
Then one of the kids found out the exact day. Beats the whole point of random searches doesn't it?
