Olympic breaststroke champion Duncan Goodhew hosted a masterclass to inspire swimming stars of the future.

Future Olympic hopeful, William Rendell, and the Croydon Amphibians club took part in the class held in the pool at Whitgift School, Haling Park, Croydon.

The 13-year-old won a competition in January to take part in the class alongside 20 of his friends, as well as £400 swim equipment.

William first learned to swim when he was six and joined the Croydon Amphibians aged 10, while his favourite event is the 100m butterfly.

He said: "I entered the British Gas competition in the event programme at Regional in January and forgot about it, so I was amazed when I found out I’d won.

"Duncan Goodhew is one of the best swimmers Britain’s ever had, so it’s brilliant that me and my friends can train with him and learn about what it takes to be an Olympic champion."

Mr Goodhew said: "I really enjoy inspiring young swimmers and it’s great to be here coaching William and his fellow Croydon Amphibians.

"Swimming is a fantastic sport that can offer so much to young people of all abilities and I hope the legacy of London 2012 continues to encourage more people to get into the water."
