Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway is in line for an award in recognition of his fight to stop scrap metal dealers blighting his constituency.

Mr Ottaway has bagged a nomination for the first ever Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Awards, honours designed to celebrate dedication, commitment and selfless efforts among British politicans.

The long-serving Conservative MP has been shortlisted for the Policy Driver award after forcing his Scrap Metal Dealers Bill through three readings in the House of Commons, potentially spelling an end to metal theft and the resultant damage, disruption and cost to the economy.

The illicit scrap metal trade is estimated to have cost taxpayers £750 million.

Mr Ottaway's campaign has seen him visit scrap-metal yards and meet organisations affected by theft.

The Awards' ceremony will take place on January 31, 2013.

Talyn Rahman-Figueroa, director of Grassroot Diplomat, said: "The Initiative Award seeks to build trust again between the ‘us and them’ and bring people of all statuses together."
