Inspectors have told a South Croydon primary school to improve its teaching.

Regina Coeli Catholic Primary School's latest Ofsted report outlined several areas for improvement and said teaching standards were patchy and pupil progress was "frequently limited".

But pupils were praised for their behaviour and attedance, while Year 6 children were singled out as high achievers.

Regina Coeli, on Pampisford Road, was judged to 'require improvement' overall.

It is the school's first report  since the old inspection system, under which the same grade would have been deemed 'satisfactory', was abolished in September.

In the report, inspectors said: "The quality of teaching is too variable. Too little teaching is consistently good or better.

"As a result, pupil progress and trends in attainment are uneven across key stages and subjects."

The school's pupil achievement, quality of teaching and leadership and management were all deemed to require improvement.

Inspectors said: "Although there are pockets of better teaching in the school, there is still not enough good teaching to ensure that pupils make consistently good or better progress, particularly in writing.

"In some cases, the teacher’s questions and activities during the lesson are not matched closely to individual needs.

"Some pupils find the work too easy, whilst some find it too hard. As a result, pupils’ progress is frequently limited."

But school was graded 'good' for the behaviour and safety of its pupils.

The report said: "Pupils are polite, welcoming and well behaved."

"Pupils told inspectors that the good behaviour seen during the inspection was typical and most parents and carers agree that pupils are well behaved.

"Pupils want to do their best and are keen to do well in lessons so that their behaviour in lessons is good."

Inspectors told the school it could improve by sharing good practice more widely and providing teachers with more feedback.

Ofsted changed its inspection grading system earlier this year in a bid to spur "coasting" schools on to improvement.
