It would be based at the former adult education college, and would take over Croydon arena, which would continue to be shared by local teams and clubs.

Talks have already started with Croydon FC and the Croydon Harriers, both of whom use the sports arena as their base.

Proposals put forward will allow both organisations to continue to use the site, with the added bonus that all of its facilities would be significantly upgraded Councillor.

Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, families and learning, said: "This idea is more than just another school expansion - it is a genuine Olympic legacy project that focuses attention on Croydon’s growing reputation for sporting prowess.

"Our young athletes took gold in the London Youth Games this year, and I’d like to dedicate these new proposals to their success.

"In making this announcement we are also starting the process of looking for partners to take the project forward."
