Epsom Hockey Club skipper James Midmer described as “decent” the victory that took the side to second in the Hampshire/Surrey Regional Division One.

Goals from Oli Hildrey, Alex Pizzey, Paul Atkinson and a Scott Barton brace took all the points from a pulsating 5-4 win at Fareham 2nds.

Just three points separate second place from sixth, but leaders Old Cranleighians are nine points ahead of Epsom having dropped just two points out of 30.

Midmer said: “Fareham pushed us all the way but we started very well to lead 3-0.

“At 5-2 in the second half we were in control, but I got sent to the sin bin and Fareham came back to 5-4. The nerves were jangling but we held on.

“Our passing game was much sharper than at some early stages of this season and we’re finally starting to show a more clinical side in front of goal.

“Overall, it was a decent performance from the boys and we’re nine games unbeaten.”

Epsom go into the winter break with the visit of Havant 2nds on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Epsom Ladies lost 3-0 at home to Hampstead & Westminister.
