Trams in Sutton are not featured in Transport for London's (TfL) 10-year-plan but it is up to council to make sure it features in next year's revised according to the borough's representative on the London Assembly.

Extending the Tramlink so it links to Sutton has long been on TfL's radar but it does not feature anywhere in its 10-year-plan, released last week.

But Steve O'Connell, Sutton's representative on the London Assembly, which works with councils and the public to scrutinise and influence London Mayor Boris Johnson, says he intends to work with Sutton Council to make sure linking Sutton to the tram network is part of the plan when it is revised next year.

He said: "TfL's draft business plan recognises the increasing demand for Tramlink. It specifically commits TfL to work with stakeholders to develop proposals, and how these will be funded. We now need to work together, across the political divide to bring the tram to Sutton.

"For my part I will work tirelessly to bring the tram to our town, and will be writing to the leader of the council to sit down together, together with TfL, to achieve our ambition."

Croydon's tram network is set to be improved, according to the plan, with stretches of the line doubled up to increase frequency."
