KFC is appealing the decision of councillors to reject an application to turn a historic Ewell pub into a fast-food takeaway and restaurant.

At a meeting of Epsom Council’s planning committee on December 6, councillors voted to reject an application by the fast-food giant to turn the Organ and Dragon, which was a pub and Thai restaurant, into a KFC.

The majority said development on the site, at the junction of London Road and Ewell By-Pass, would have "an adverse impact on the highway’s safety" - to the delight of residents who presented a 1,000-signature petition to the council opposing the plans.

But KFC announced today that it will be appealing the decision.

A spokeswoman said: "We were obviously disappointed that our planning application for the Organ and Dragon site was rejected.

"We believe that KFC would be a positive addition to the community in Ewell, and will be appealing the decision."
